4 week Pregnant

The fourth week sets you in the embryonic period. At this moment your baby’s organs have just begun to develop and some of them have begun to function. Thus, this period is when your baby is most vulnerable to anything that interferes with her development.

Developments in the 4th week of pregnancy:

In the embryonic period the baby’s heart, spinal cord, heart, brain and other organs start forming. Your baby now is 1/25 inch long.

Your baby is poppy seed sized, with two layers. One layer is the epiblast and the other is called the hypoblast. From these layers the body parts and organs of your baby will develop.

The placenta which is in its initial stage at this time is also in two layers. The cells of the placenta form the tunnels in the uterus lining. This creates space for the blood to flow, and this becomes vital for the developed placenta which facilitates the provision of oxygen and necessary nutrients to your baby when it will start functioning at the end of the fourth week.

The amniotic sacs now are developed which house your baby. The amniotic fluid is like a cushion to your baby as she grows. The yolk sac forms the red blood cells and delivers the vital nutrients to her till the placenta fully develops to function properly.

You have missed your periods at the end of the fourth week, is it time you go for a pregnancy test?

Well, your periods have been delayed! Now, it is time you go for a home pregnancy test. Pregnancy tests detect a hormone that is present in the blood or urine unique to pregnant woman. This hormone is commonly known as the pregnancy hormone or chorionic gonadotropin (Hcg).

HGC is forms when the fertilized egg gets implanted in the uterus. This phenomenon occurs six days post conception. But, in some women the embryo delays this implant. The level of Hcg increases progressively with each day of pregnancy.

Most of these tests detect the hormone 14 days post fertilization. The longer period of time you wait the accurate the result of the test.
